Devastating facts:
Hunger is definitely one of the dominant killers in Africa. 13.1% of the world's population is hungry; that's roughly 925 million people. Just 239 million of those people live in Africa. Sadly, one person dies of hunger every four seconds around the globe.
Poverty, the main reason of hunger, is yet again a major killer in Africa. To be truly starving, you must be below the poverty line. After reading this, it's no surprise that 75% of the world's poorest countries are located in Africa.
Child hunger- the hardest part to accept. Nearly one in four children are starving from malnutrition. Malnutrition means a state of poor nutrition from lack of good nutritional food. Virtually half the deaths of children under five are caused by hunger.
In one of the pictures above, it may look like the children are over fed. But they really have a disease called kwashiorkor. Kwashiorkor is a form of malnutrition that most often affects children in developing regions of the world where there is limited food supply. The main sign of kwashiorkor is having too much fluid in body tissues, causing swelling under the skin. LM
